I'm wondering if there is a setting I can change in order to avoid freezing
when CPU usage is 100%.
I thought that the XP system was supposed to use some hard disc space when
RAM's full: how can I improve this feature?

You are mixing up filling RAM with using all the capacity of the CPU
(the actual chip that does the work) . If you have a program that grabs
all the CPU it can get, it will prevent anything else running and cause
a freeze. R-click in the Taskbar, Task Manager. Look on the Processes
page for any process that is using a high % or CPU. (other than System
idle - which is the spare CPU left over when nothing is happening) and
let us know

Based on what you have said in your other comments on this thread I
suspect that the main cause of your problems is the FX trading site
and whatever web pages, active X controls, and java applets are
associated with it.

Do you know anyone else who accesses the FX trading site? Do they
experience the same issues as you do? If so then my suspicions are
confirmed. If not then you need to explore in detail what differences
there are between your computer and the other persons, both in terms
of hardware specs and what other software they have installed and
running.

It may be that a background program that you are using (antivirus,
spyware prevention, popup stopper, etc etc) and which they do not use
is conflicting with the FX site stuff in some way, thereby causing
your problems.

Good luck

Hello Ron, thanks for your useful explainations here and in the other posts.
I thought about what you said before writing to the newsgroup.
Then I noticed the Trading program works very well if everything else is
closed.
It's still fast enough with OE6 open, but I cannot run the MSN Messenger nor
open IE6.
When I had a WinME box 1G proc 256MB RAM, I had the same troubles.
Then I decided to buy a more powerful machine (WinXP 2G proc 1G RAM), but
things didn't improve as much as I thought.
That's why I'm struggling to trim some settings: about the Paging File size,
I'm trying now Minimum 115MB and Maximum 3300MB.
Do you think those are good numbers?
Can you suggest some other adjustment?
Thanks for your help.

The Trading site is @ 40% CPU usage at start up.
Then it goes quieter (10-30%), but it spikes up at updates (60%) or when I
open a graphic diagram (Java) or a trading application (active X): the most
I've ever seen when it's the ONLY open program is 85%.
As you can see, I need a larger working area if I want to run OE6, the
Messenger, IE6.
Which settings do you suggest I should adjust?
Thanks.
