I have P4 2.8 GHz Dell with a gig of memory running XP Pro SP1. Periodically, my CPU usage will hover between 70 - 90 % usage. As I write this post it is about 2%. I have a utlility called TaskInfo 2003 which show the 2 processes contributing to most of the usage.. One is DPC (Deferred Procedure Call) Time Placeholder and a process named System (Process ID is always 4). With this utility, I can see most of the CPU Usage is attributed to a certain thread. The questions I have are... how can I see what is causing the CPU to be so saturated at times? Can I tell to what the offending thread is pointing? Are there other utilities I can use to dig a little deeper?

By the way... rebooting does not clear up the problem when it is happening.

Anybody have any ideas?

click start/run/services.msc and have a look in there. Watch/check for
Trojan activity, check firewall software if any for outbound connect
attempts which may be being blocked and thus taking up cpu useage
etc..

Wouldn't you know it... the problem has not returned (yet). Could a malware program disguise itself in a Deferred Procedure Call? What should I be looking for in the Services area?
