CPU USAGE 100%

Can't find answer anywhere. Please help.

Windows XP Home
2.4Gb Intel
512mb

With no programs or a few MS Office programs running, CPU
usage jumps from 0 to 100 to 48 to 3 to 100% continually,
causing long pauses in processing.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
