Hi I have a Celeron 2.0 and will be upgrading to a P4
3.0. The m/board can take it, but what about the o/s ?
Will I need to re-install XP to take advantage of
hyperthreading or not ?

thanks

You should not have to reinstall Windows just because of a CPU change.

However if the new P4 is the hyperthreading model then your Windows XP
may not pick this up. A properly installed Hyperthreading CPU will
show 2 CPU graphs in the Performance tab of Windows Task Manager.

If the two graphs are not present after you have replaced the CPU then
you will probably need to do a "Repair Install" of your Windows XP in
order to get the CPU recognized properly.

See http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm for details.

Good luck

One thing to try before resorting to a Repair Install.

Boot the computer in Safe Mode. Then open Control Panel - System -
Hardware - Device Manager.
Expand the Processors category and select the entry for your Celeron
CPU then click on Action - Uninstall

Immediately exit Device Manager, shut down, and reboot the computer
normally. It should redetect the CPU and configure it correctly.

Good luck
