cpu temps

I just recently installed a pentium 4 3.0, 800 mhz. cpu and im using Everest
Lavalys to track my temp. The temp readings jump constantly from 32.c to 55.
c.in seconds. should I be concerned about these differences or is this
normal? These temps are when my computer is idle.
My other computer has an Amd Athlon XP-A,cpu and its temp is a constant 32.
c. maybe 35 to 40.c while in heavy use.

The athlon runs that cool because it doesn't do all that much. It's an AMD
for crying out loud!

Make sure the BIOS is up to date and the mobo drivers, too.
You might want to use an IR temp probe to check temps, the
sensors can be less than perfect. Check the mobo maker's
site for info on their sensors.

Care to clarify your nonsensical statements? A CPU only does what's told to
do. If you defrag your hard drive, then it's doing a lot, because it's
running the defrag engine. If it's not doing much (like mine isn't at the
moment as I'm only browsing Usenet) then it's not doing anything much of
anything.

If you're implying that AMD CPUs are cooler than Intel, then you're wrong.
FX64 CPUs run very hot indeed (not as hot as Prescotts though, it has to be
said).

The temperature of the CPU has nothing whatsoever to do with the company
that manufactured it.

Go into your bios and monitor the temps. If its NOT jumping while you
are there, ie pretty much the same as being idle in windows, then your
windows temp monitoring program is faulty.
