CPU running 99%

Network: Peer to Peer 8 machines plus one acting as a
server.
All running Win2k SP3 except two are WinNT 4 SP6a
"Server" is running SP4
Netgear 2 x 8 port hubs.

Hardware:
All machines have plenty of hard drive space free > 1gb
All machine min 256mb RAM, PIII / PIV CPU
Server 1gb RAM PIV 2.8gb CPU, plugged into a 750va UPS.

Application:
Database written in 4D language driven by MS Word which
has a server module on Server and client on W/s.
Commercial application, was working correctly when the
server was WinNT 4.0
Developer suggested the Win2k Workstation Pro for the
server works fine, no need for W2K Server.

Issue:
When we changed the server (new machine better specs -
then previous machine "popped a MOBO" - now has 1gb, 2.8gb
CPU, 40gb H/d W2K.){{from WinNt 4 Sp6a 800mhz CPU 512mb
RAM}}
and reloaded all the software and apps database.
We experienced data corruptions intermittantly
- have changed out all hardware on the server and rebuilt
the OS and applications server module and apps database.
Problem now is occassional freezing of the server machine,
so disabled Opportunistic Locking on all machines
including server.
Still getting the situation where the server and working
workstations will "freeze" when running the app. and when
checked with Task Manager the app is holding 99% CPU on
the workstations AND the Server.

The only way out has been to attempt to close the App on
the server, via its own close down procedure which times
down to 0 from a 1 minute warning that you are closing
down, it only gets down to 4 secs and then fails to
complete the task even waiting 30 minutes it doesnt close
completely so have to reboot.

Not good; the potential to damage the database and then
spend 2-3 hrs reindexing the database hoping that the
database is in fact complete is painful.

Question: Any ideas as to why the app. runs away to 99%
CPU usage on Workstations and Server ?
It is only happening about once at worst twice a day
usually late in the day. No large Power draws happening.

Have a meeting with developer tomorrow but want to ensue I
have covered all th bases.

Any suggestions appreciated as this problem is killing me
slowly.

Which 2.8 CPU? Is it a 2.8C? If so, is hyperthreading enabled? If all of the
above is true, then disable hyperthreading and switch to a non MPS HAL and
see what happens.

Could you please detail how to turn off hyperthreading - BIOS or REGISTRY ?

What is meant by "switch to a non MPS HAL" - How ??

Many Thanks
