Hi, for the last 2 months my intel p4 2600, 512mb ram, soltec mb, has been
turning off for no reason. Running a few progs @ same time can cause it to
shut down - or even copying data to cd/dvd can do the same. Also downloading
trial software from say www.ulead.com come up as corrupt files yet on another
pc work fine?? Pc freezes when trying to copy video to hd or dvd after 30secs
to 4mins? too.
Just reinstalled xp pro sp2 as picked up a nasty trojan virus istsvc
(web--search homepage hijacker). Thought it would also cure above problem
but no.

Thought it could be pc overheating but have now taken covers off and still
same?

My next thought is has my bios got a virus? or is the motherboard/intel
chip got a problem?

Is it simpler to replace mb and intel chip with new?

Ideas gratefull recieved as its doing my head in and my family :-)

There are NO viruses that infect the BIOS - NONE.

They do from what i have heard and read and also as per R Johnsons post - my
pc works other than crashing from know reason other than those stated -
thought it was heat but sorted that and always run virus update every day and
check too - infact virus checking causes the pc to crash as well - now
thought I had virus so did online check with 2 reputable progs and nothing
found? seems the pc doesnt like working hard?

I think you are closer looking at the temperature problem than with virus
problems.
Could be all kinds of hardware problems. A virus gets blamed for nearly
every kind of computer problem.
I had a guy tell me a virus had fried his motherboard. How sad! :-)
Might be the power supply getting tired. Or a harddrive dragging too much
power.

See if the CPU fan is up to speed.
Check for dirt and dust restricting the CPU airflow.
CPU overheating looks good for a cause

Could be an inadequate, marginal or failing power supply or bad ram.
Download memtest86+ from www.memtest86.org and test the memory.

Also download a hard drive diagnostic utility from the drive
manufacturer's web site. That will create a bootable floppy; run the
diagnostics from there.

Ray:

READ what you sent. That is an article on the CIH (aka; Chernobyl) virus. On the 26th of a
given month or based upon the variant on any month, the CIH will wipe the BIOS of
motherboards who have Flash BIOS and have not had their BIOS either jumpered or set to be
READ ONLY. In addition, the Chernobyl will overwrite the hard disk with random "junk" or
"garbage". That is on the 26th of the month the payload of the Chernobyl will erase the
BIOS and thus render the platform impotent and unable to boot. It is one of the few viruses
that *might* be considered to destroy hardware. It should be noted that NT based OSs are
NOT infectable by the Chernobyl. The Kriz is a copycat virus that will; erase the BIOS,
erase the CMOS and overwrite hard disk sectors with garbage.

That being said, there is no virus that "infects" the BIOS. To infect the BIOS would mean
the virus would have to inert its own code into the BIOS and modify the behaviour of said
BIOS. There is NO virus that does this.

Enough said.
