CPU & Memory for an Asus A7N8X

R

Richard Brooks

Hello.

My PC is a couple of years old and has an Asus A7N8X Deluxe motherboard,
which was supposed to be good for upgrading/overclocking. It's currently
still as purchased with an Athlon XP2200 CPU and 512MB 184 pin 2.5v 333 Mhz
memory.

I'm not very up on the latest CPU, memory and motherboard options, aside
from the fact that looking at component suppliers there seem to be a lot of
AMD options available! I would be grateful if someone could let me know
whether it's cost effective and worthwhile for me to now upgrade the CPU and
memory? And if so, what would be the combination to go for to deliver a real
performance boost without breaking the bank?

Alternatively, would it be better to just bite the bullet and get a complete
new system?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers.

You can't go very far. Check into the semprons, I believe they make a
socket a sempron that might work.

Hello Chris.

I just had a look at some of those on www.novatech.co.uk and www.dabs.com
and they seem to be described as Socket 754.

My motherboard manual refers to the CPU type as Socket A (462).

Do you know if those Socket 754 Semprons will work on my board, or is it
actually the case that none of the current crop of CPUs will fit my A7N8X?

Thanks.

Mwave refers to socket 754 and socket 462; I believe the later is the
same as socket a.

Richard, you're going to be relegated to the Socket A Semprons. The Socket
754
cpu's will not fit/work on your board. Also, if you go w/ a Socket A
Sempron you'll
likely need to do a BIOS flash w/ your current cpu before you swap in the
Sempron.

Thanks for that Jeff. I did search for Asus motherboard information
previously, but I didn't come across that page.

Looks as though an Athlon XP 3200+(400 MHz FSB)(Model 10)(Barton) would do
me a treat, but finding one might be the problem!

Any idea how to check the PCB number? It looks as though I could use a
Socket A Sempron if I have PCB 2. Of course, I might not be able to find one
of those either.

Cheers

You could squeeze an XP3200 Barton core in there.
Your board is a Socket A (462) so you'll probably need to look on Ebay for
the CPU.
Alternatively, if you're into Overclocking, you could buy an XP-M2500 or
2600 CPU. These are generally able to be overclocked to 3200XP speeds and
higher.
Cheers!

Yeah, good luck finding the exact CPU model that you need. I have a
A7N8X deluxe upstairs with a 2600+ chip in it. If/when it finally dies
I'll simply replace the entire motherboard with something new.

(An Athlon64 3000+ motherboard bundle with 1GB of RAM is only $335. A
Sempron 2600+ bundle is $205 with 1GB of RAM.)

Upgrading from a 2200 to a 3200 would be worth it, however if you can do
it for cheap. The PCB revision number should be written on the
motherboard somewhere. Probably near the Asus logo.

Athlon 3200+ 400fsb in stock or
Athlon 3000+ 333fsb in stock and you can use your old memory.

Thank you Victor.

Unfortunately US companies don't seem to like shipping to the UK (were I
am). Also, unless I'm reading the price incorrectly, it seems more expensive
than I was expecting at around $230. I thought stuff like this was generally
cheaper in the US?

Obviously it's not an identical model, but an AMD 3300 Sempron seems to be
around £88 in the UK:

It's also a Socket 754 not Socket A (but you probably noticed that :)
Having had a look around the various PC parts sites I use, I hadn't realised
just how rare Socket A parts have become now.

I think you'll have to resign yourself to obtaining a CPU from eBay, whether
it be a XP3200 or a XP-M2500 or 2600.
Cheers!

Yes, looks as though you're right Graham.

I may have a dabble at some overclocking first.

Fingers crossed...

It's supply and demand.Since these older processors are no longer
manufactured the price goes up.A new AMD Athlon 64 3700+ Processor
skt939 is $212 US and an Athlon 64 3000 only$124 US.Try Ebay,I bought
an Athlon 64 2800+ for $70 +6 shipping about 6months ago.Although
higher clocked older Athlon xp's can be a bit pricey even on Ebay. Many
don't want to go through the hassle of a backup-reinstall-reload all
programs. All considered sometimes you get to a point where you're just
better off selling your mb,cpu, and ram and buying new.-Vic

Seems to me that most hardware is a bit pricey on eBay. I wouldn't
want to buy a computer hardware component like a CPU or video card
on eBay that isn't factory sealed. Even for components that are
allegedly OEM, I typically find lower prices from real stores like
NewEgg and ZipZoomFly.

I'm not trying to bash eBay, it's fine for some other things IMO.

Good luck.
