CPU fan speed

Hi
Background:
Recently I have noticed that my Athlon XP 2800 CPU is
running at about 65oC at idle and 65-72oC when under 100%
load. I have installed an exhaust fan which has brought
the temp to about 61oC at idle and 65-70oC under 100%
load. This is not as much of an improvement as I hoped
for. Using Everest I have noticed that the CPU fan speed
has dropped and only occasionally gets up to full speed
(ie when CPU is at its hottest). Clearly I want it at
full speed all the time.

Question:
Is there any way to contol the CPU fan through software?
(I have no options in the BIOS) in XP Home?

Thanks

Probably the bearings in the fan are getting worn or even
have lost some lubrication. And the dirt on the blades
increases drag reducing RPM and airflow.

Make sure the computer is clean inside, that the fan blades
on all fans have the lint removed and that the fans all work
together to guide the air in a uniform pattern that leaves
no calm eddies. Make sure that ribbon cable do not block
air-flow.

I have cleaned the dust out (there wasnt much) but
unfortunately it has made any difference.

Is there any software to control the fan speed?

Is 72oC too hot for an Athlon 2800+ under full load?

Thanks.

Fans run at whatever speed they are designed to run at.. AMD processors do
have a tendency to run hot.. replace the fan if it is not running at a
constant fast speed..

I have just replaced my fan as my system was hitting 80 0c and becoming very
very unstable if you start getting random stop errors like i was, as a first
set try a new fan!!

It depends on your motherboard. Some motherboards are able to control the
CPU fan, other aren't able to do it... But, it sounds to me that your
motherboard is automaticly doing it for you (the cooler the CPU gets, the
lower speed the fan runs at).

Do you have "cooling pasta" between your CPU and CPU fan (a silicon and
sometimes silver colored "gel")? That's an absolutely must-have... My P4
reached 60*C and above without it. It's running right now at 49*C with 100%
load... :)

Another thing you can do is to "underclock" your CPU, if your motherboard
supports it (the opposite to overclocking, lowering the buss speed instead
of increasing it). 10% is usually enough for dropping the temp 4-5 degrees.
But, the bad thing is that you'll get a slower computer...

My brand-new Opterons (retail box version with AMD heatsinks/fans) run at
68-69C, as reported by the BIOS. One of the fans is running at half the
speed of the other, but the temps are the same.

you might also remove the heatsink and cleanm the cpu with alcohol and
then replace the grease and heat sink. You could also add a second
cooling fan.
