CPU fan runs at very high speed.

Just within the last few days the fan runs where you can
barely hear it, which is usual and then when you click
onto anything it ramps up to a very high RPM and stays
there from then on. does not come down in RPM until you
end session or shut off computer? any ideas or suggestions?
