Recently I noticed my pc is slow and on checking the Task Manager Process
tab, I noticed that the process "system" by user "system" is using in excess
of 50% of my cpu resources most of the time. Is this normal or do I have a
problem with virus/spyware etc?
I have Panda AV installed in my system. Thanks

On this machine here system is using 00 CPU/ 220K memory.

Delete all temp files, reboot and run sysclean and AD-Aware from safe
mode.
You can google for both, make sure you update both before running
the scans.

I have the same issue. My "hyperthreading" cpu shows one CPU pegged by the
"SYSTEM" process.

I removed all add-onn harware, same problem. I did a clean reload of Windows
(Media Center 2005) and still have the same problem.

If I attempt to put the machine into Standby, it won't. After the desktop
comes back, the "SYSTEM" process no longer uses the CPU.

I disabled hyperthreading in BIOS, and the CPU is pegged to 100%. The
machine appears to go into standby, but won't come out, and I need to power
down.
