After I have been on the internet and loged off my computer runs
exrtreamly slow. There are 5251 handles, 313 threads, and 33 processes
and the CPU is operating at 30%+ with no programs running. Even playing
solitary is a chore as the mouse moves very jerky and is hard to
control. I have 98 on the older computer and it is running faster than
this one. I have ran "Ad- aware" to no advail. When I hold down the
space key the courser moves 5 palcea then stops then moves 5 more then
stops ect. it is enought to drive sopme one nuts. Anyone have any
ideas? Thanks in advance.

Well, technically, ANY background job is still a program, and there are many
background jobs (or services) running under the OS at any given time. I
presume what YOU mean by program is a foreground application, like Word,
Notepad, IE, etc.

CTRL-ATL-DEL and bring up the Task Manager, go to Processes, then sort based
on CPU, which process is consuming the most CPU time?

Btw, you can always use the Task Manager to kill a runaway process, which
this may be. Of course, depending on which process it is, there's the risk
of destabilizing the system, but sometimes you have no choice if you hope to
regain control. Make sure to write down the process name before doing so,
in case it happens again.

This is not that uncommon, on a rare occasion, something like IE will
runaway, perhaps due to a bug, or even some bad Javascript. I've even seen
programs who's user interface becomes detached from the process, so it
*seems* as if the program is closed, but it's not, only the user interface
is gone, the associated process is still pumping away. You have little
choice but to kill those processes w/ Task Manager.

For non-viral malware...

Please download, install and update the following software...

* Ad-aware SE v1.06
http://www.lavasoft.de/
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

* SpyBot Search and Destroy v1.4
http://security.kolla.de/

After the software is updated, I suggest scanning the system in Safe Mode.

I also suggest downloading, installing and updating BHODemon for any Browser Helper Objects
that may be on the PC.

* BHODemon
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm

For viral malware...

* Download MULTI_AV.EXE from the URL --
http://www.ik-cs.com/programs/virtools/Multi_AV.exe

To use this utility, perform the following...
Execute; Multi_AV.exe { Note: You must use the default folder C:\AV-CLS }
Choose; Unzip
Choose; Close

Execute; C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT
{ or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS }

NOTE: You may have to disable your software FireWall or allow WGET.EXE to go through your
FireWall to allow it to download the needed AV vendor related files.

C:\AV-CLS\StartMenu.BAT -- { or Double-click on 'Start Menu' in C:\AV-CLS}
This will bring up the initial menu of choices and should be executed in Normal Mode.
This way all the components can be downloaded from each AV vendor's web site.
The choices are; Sophos, Trend, McAfee, Kaspersky, Exit this menu and Reboot the PC.

You can choose to go to each menu item and just download the needed files or you can
download the files and perform a scan in Normal Mode. Once you have downloaded the files
needed for each scanner you want to use, you should reboot the PC into Safe Mode [F8 key
during boot] and re-run the menu again and choose which scanner you want to run in Safe
Mode. It is suggested to run the scanners in both Safe Mode and Normal Mode.

When the menu is displayed hitting 'H' or 'h' will bring up a more comprehensive PDF help
file. http://www.ik-cs.com/multi-av.htm

Thanks Jim. I read both messages and will work from the "Task Manager %
use" to find the problem.
