coying files with duplicate file names

I have a digital camera that automatically assigns
numeric file names like P1010002.JPG. When the picutes
are erased, it starts again with P1010001, etc. I have a
directory called "new pictures" into which I use Windows
Explorer to copy new pictures directly from my camera. I
then move each file into an appropriate subdirectory.
The problem I have is now when I use windows explorer and
copy or move files into this empty "New Pictures"
subdirectory windows restores old files with the same
file names as the new ones that I am trying to copy or
move, rather than copying the new files. I lost a few
pictures by using the "Move to Folder" option rather
than "Copy to Folder". This seems like a serious
problem. Has anyone else encountered this?

Yes it's a pain.

Try keeping images in subfolders with names like July02, Aug04 etc.
or
The excelent and "free" image program called IrfanView has a batch rename
facility.
