Whenever I try to convert a database from 2000 to 2007 I get error message
"You attempted to open a database that is already opened exclusively by user
<name> on machine <name>. Try again when the database is available. (Error
3356)" which makes no sense to me. Have tried "Open" and "Open Exclusive"
neither alters the outcome. I am sole user on my PC and therefore of course
also the administrator. Can anybody help me please?

1. Make sure there is no LDB file in the folder where the database reside.

2. Open Access 2007, and create a new database.
Then import everything from the old one.
(External Data tab of the ribbon.)

(This assumes the old database is not secured.)

Thanks, I had already used the method you described but I guess my natural
curiousity prompted me to want to know why a Micrfosoft designed procedure
doesn't work

It does work for scenarios that don't interfere (e.g. startup code that
opens a recordset that is not released, and so prevents a later exclusive
open.)

The suggested workaround is just a simple way to get around whatever caused
the problem, without having to track down what caused it. (But you'd
probably guessed that already.)

All the best as you learn the new version. Perhaps this info will be of use
at some point:
