Counting days excluding weekends

I have an attendance database that we use to track absences. Basically, you
enter the employees name, the first date of their absence period and athe
last date of their absence period. Subtracting the last abs date from the
first abs date (and adding 1) gives the number of days absent but included
weekends. Can I modify this to exclude weekends (in a nice simple way)?
