countif greater/less than argument

Hi I'm trying to get a countif argument to work where the condition is greter
than "a reference", ie:

=(COUNTIF(K5:K1136,">DATA_RANGES!C3"))-COUNTIF(K5:K1136,">DATA_RANGES!C4")

I am guessing it is simple, but just can't figure it out......

=COUNTIF(K5:K1136,">"&Data_Ranges!C3)
-COUNTIF(K5:K1136,">"&Data_Ranges!C4)
