COUNTIF Function and range selection

How can you specify in the COUNTIF() function a finite data range for
range that could vary from time to time without having to redefine th
range in the formula. Something like doing a SHFT+CNTL+Down Arro
within the formula.

=COUNTIF(OFFSET($A$2,,,COUNTA($A:$A),1),"My Criteria")

for column A
