MS have just advised me that my XP may be counterfeit. I want to buy a copy
of XP Academic upgrade SP2, will this sort out the problem? Can I just load
it over the top of XP Pro? What do I have to do to protect my data?

Doesn't that dialog also offer an option/button to get a legit copy
(which would probably be cheaper)? If you have reasonable proof that
you purchased the pirated copy in good faith, it appears Microsoft is
excusing some victims. I haven't gone through the exercise of WGA
telling me my copy is illegal and offering me the option to prove myself
to get a legit copy (presumably at reduced cost). Maybe one of the MVPs
know. There is also the WGA forum over at
http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ where you could ask.

The solution is never as easy as it seems. An Academic version
might not install over the current XP Pro version nor might it
be less costly than MS's online solution. But first things first.
Protect the data and worry about WGA second. Next, troubleshoot
WGA since it might be indicating a false hit.
