The only way to install Windows XP Home Edition on a computer
running Windows XP Professional is to perform a "clean install"
which requires a reformat of the hard drive.

The best way,is 1st install xp cd (running in old xp installation),select
file transfer
wizard, set as old computer, select files, folders, settings, etc for it to
save,save
the data in a new folder you created, after all data is completed, move the
folder to a cd.Next,restart computer,boot to xp cd,select install xp,new
copy,
delete the partition (xp pro),create one, then xp formats and installs
auto.Also,
with pro already installed, you shouldnt have a problem with xp verifying
for old
windows OS,but next xp install,if you purchased the upgrade,it will require
it......

The only way to change from WinXP Pro to WinXP Home is to format
the drive and start over. There is no supported downgrade path or
technique.

After backing up any data you wish to preserve, and using the File
and Settings Wizard to preserve personal settings, simply boot from the
WinXP Home installation CD. You'll be offered the opportunity to
delete, create, and format partitions as part of the installation
process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot devices in the
PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure you CANNOT go from XP Pro to XP Home.
I think you should:

A. Return the XP Home disk to the retailer in exchange for an XP Pro
disk. This will probably cost additional money, as XP Pro is slightly
more expensive. You can then replace the current license key with the
new one, without reinstalling Windows. You can find instructions for
this operation online, or call Microsoft for help.
or

B. Call Microsoft and ask for help. This is what you should have done
in the first place; they can sell you a new license key over the phone,
and if you have an actual counterfeit XP Pro disk, MS will give you a
new license free in exchange.
