Count using a field of the form and looking into a database

Hi everyone,
I am new to this forum and so far I have found a lot of really useful
stuff so thanks!!!
I have a question and its kinda complicated since I am trying to do a
lot of things at the same time. Here is the situation.
I have a form that is used to record activity. Most of the fields on
the form are Dlookups using a contract number. Once the user enters
the contract number, 5 fields do a dlookup on it and fill most of the
form. The dlookup is to a database that is constantly updated. So far,
this has worked perfectly!
I am trying to bring a count field in the database which is where it
gets complicated. I am trying to create a field that counts the ref #
(which is pulled through a dlookup on the contract#) so that every
time the user enters the contract # he or she can see how many other
items are there on the same ref# as this contract #. So if contract A
has the Reference # 1, and under Ref #1, there are 20 other items, I
want this field to show me 20. All of this data lies in the same
database XYZ.
Can anyone help??? I would really appreciate any suggestions you have.
THanks,
Kaiser
