When I'm working I make use of the quick totals feature in the statu
bar at the bottom of the excel screen.

Most of the time, I use the SUM setting, but sometimes I use the COUN
setting if I want to do a quick count up of items.

What I have tried to do for a long time is achieve the same thing usin
one of the COUNT functions. You can countif or countblanks but as fa
as I can see you can't countitems in a range.

I have Excel 2000.

Can someone advise me of a way to achieve this please

Counting a list of alphanumeric items requires the COUNTA function, which is not available on that toolbar by default. To my knowledge, the feature is not editable

<-*-><-*-><-*-><-*-><-*-><-*-><-*-><-*-
Hope this helps

I have the COUNTA function, but the syntax to capture all items has s
far eluded me. How do I use this function to count items in a rang
irrespective of the alphanumeric content ?

Thank

Thanks Frank,

I feel really silly now, but can only say in my defence that th
function wizard which I use to enter all my functions asks fo
value1,value2 and so on. It doesn't ask for a range which is what th
above answer is.

Ho hum... You learn something new everyday and sometimes it i
devastatingly simple too !

Thanks again
