Good one Jay, I tought that the question was
"is there a way to count how many ?"
where the "?" was an actual "?"...
I did think it was a funny way to phrase a question, but I have seen much
worse before...

1. Ctrl+F to open the Find dialog.

2. Type "?" (without the quotation marks) in the "Find what" box.

3. Check the box for "Highlight all items found."

4. Click Find All.

Word will tell you how many instances it found.

Yes, I read the post a couple of times before it started to make some sense.

Of course, my instinct was to reach for a macro, but Suzanne's answer is
easier to use.
