Count behaviour not as expected

I am seeing wierd behaviour with count in access XP

I have two tables one with 288 records and a lookup table with 67

When I link in a query and do a group I get figure equaling the number of
records, however when I do a count on the ID (or any other figure) I get

Category CountOfcomplaint_id
E 750
I 136
L 200
M 3042
S 320

I am very bemused

Caan someone explain this to me
 
You need to ask this question in the Microsoft Access news groups. If this
is being done on your web page using ASP please post the code you're using
so we can see what's happening.
