Corrupted Video Card Driver?

I have the following problem with both an ASUS/NVIDIA and ATI Radeon video
card, i.e. following the boot sequence, Device Manager shows the respective
cards with yellow exclamation marks and no monitor...if I uninstall the
Display adapter, whichever it is and run the Hardware Wizard [Control Panel],
the adapter is correctly identified/installed as well as my hp f70 monitor.

At this point everything functions correctly. The problem comes with
computer shutdown and reboot...the process has to be repeated with every
reboot. Windows is not saving my settings!

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated as I don't intend to reformat my
HD and reload four years of application/updates if at all possible!

If the BIOS is set properly,you might reinstall the chipset drivers from the
boards mfg web site,get the utility for that boards chipset.Also,if youre
running
a 4 year old xp installation youre overdue to reinstall,however you
might/should
create a new user account,open xp in new,see if all runs ok,if so youre user
account is corrupted...

Reinstall the drivers from the manu sites respectively, not the default win
drivers, as per manu instructions.
As you appear to be using two cards, your pwr supply is up to it?
The cards are later models, not AGP/PCI cards?
If the later, remove one of the cards and check as to whether pc functions
correctly, after having installed manu drivers.

Ron.......did you uninstall the Nvidia drivers before you installed the ATI
video card??
When you say "native to" do you mean it is a build in on the mothoard video
chip..or is it a seperate AGP card like the ATI??
The normal procedure for changing a video card would be to remove it from
Device Manager....remove the drivers under Control Panel/add&remove. Then
shut down and physically remove the card from the machine.OR if it was a
chip on the board disable it in the BIOS...some cannot be disabled and need
the amount of RAM allocated to it set to 0...old HP machines in particular.
Install the new Card and restart..........XP would automatically detect and
load "generic" drivers.
Once XP was up and running install the drivers for the new card.........a
reboot is usually required at this point.

To add to this, there was a graphic driver uninstall utility available, that
very often helped with corrupt drivers, however I understand its no longer
free (Driver Cleaner Pro) - I used it when I had issues with a graphics
driver.

"Attempted" to uninstall the NVIDIA drivers, but without success...went to
"second level" support with NVIDIA and was ultimately pointed to a third
party utility for the task. Local support did not feel this was absolutely
necessary, so it was not done.

The ASUS/NVIDIA card is a separate AGP bus card like the ATI...

The procedure you outlined was attempted...it was anticipated that XP would
"detect and load generic drivers," this was not the case, XP requested a
disc, etc. right up front.
