corrupted user profile

I run Windows XP Home with SP2.
Beginning 9/21/07 had message pop up upon start stating " Windows cannot
load locally stored profile. . . corrupted local file. . . log in with temp
profile. .."

So, I run chkdisc, comes back all clean.
Tried restore with 3 diff dates and none successful.
Tried fix in article 811151. . .
On 1st attempt, as I am clicking folders to copy it begins copying and
continues copying for over 2 hours making 5 to 6 copies of each folder. I go
ahead and try to paste to new user, but it gets stuck on several files and
says try again.
2nd attempt I create 2nd new user and copy files from original user which
again takes hours and gets hung on symantec folder. I fearfully disable
norton and try again. Now can copy files, but again goes for hours and makes
8 copies of all. Paste to new user and log on to new user. No change, fix
didnt work.
3rd attempt, create 3rd new user, select orginal folders from orginal user (
not copies of copies) and am able to copy and paste to newest user. This time
only took about an hour. Log on as newest user. Now some of my things appear
on desktop, but not as I had them, Still no wallpaper, cant connect to
internet or email and most settings are not as I had them. All 3 attempts I
made sure not to copy DAT files. 2nd new user shows up only on log in page
and no where else. Now I am over my head with nothing else I know to try. I
would love to be able to turn on puter and have it set up like I had it. This
cant be this hard !!! Please help ! Many thanks, Powder.

Create a new userr and ONLY copy things you need from the old profile.

Favorites from IE.
Email files.
Stuff from "My Documents"...
Maybe some shortcuts from the Desktop folder...

Don't copy the entire profile. All you are doing is replicating the problem
that is likely in the NTUSER.DAT file and possibly Local Settings and
Application Data someplace. The above will recreate your user in a minimal
fashion without corrupting the new user.

thanx for answering. I did not copy any of the ntuser files, there were 3 I
left alone. How do I know what I need to copy ? I thot I had done that and
that is when I only got back some of my folders on the desktop, but not my
settings on how things should look and run. This is getting complicated !

You will have to reset the look and many of the program settings - or just
do it as you notice them. Create the new profile, copy your Desktop,
Favorites, My Documents contents and kinda go from there. Come back and ask
about any other stuff you are missing (be specific) and people here may be
able to tell you where to find the files/folders or methods of importing
that particular stuff (like email/contacts/etc) from the other profile.

As for the layout of your desktop, the drop down history in your programs,
the settings specific to your user - you are better off in the case of a
corrupt profile just to recreate those as needed. You need to know how to
do all that anyway - or most likely will at some point. Aesthetics should
not be causing you this much grief and costing this much of your time when
you could just copy the files/folders you really need (listed above to start
with) and start using your computer again - fixing the look/feel as you go.

specifically, I cannot connect to email account, OE acts as if never had one.
I cannot connect to internet by clicking on IE, also acts as if never on line
before. So , no favorites on IE even tho shows I copied a favorites folder.
Am I to run wizard and re do internet connection I had before ? Why wasnt
that info ina folder from the other profile ? There are now 2 programs
on desktop named hpothb07 that were not there before along with a program
Thumbs that I've never seen before. What do I do with these ?
And how do I know I copied all I needed ? Should I delete the other users,
including the original ? All info is appreciated. Powder.
