Corrupted Hive File

frajul2

I mistakenly put the wrong setup disk (XP Pro SP3 slipstream setup disk) into
a XP Home SP3 computer and removed the disk after it started. When I rebooted
I got the Blue screen with the corrupted Hive message. Can't get into Safe
mode (same message) Tried doing a format and new install but it worked only
on the unused part of the disk (15Gig of a 40 Gig drive). How would I get
back the full 40 Gig?

Hi frajul2,

Do you have more than one computer? If you don't have a Backup of your
Documents, E-mails, AddressBook and Favorites as well as any downloaded
files, I would suggest you remove the Hard Drive containing your information
and mount that Hard Drive into another computer. in order to save that
information. Then put the Hard Drive back in the computer you removed it
from.

Now, you will need to wipe the partition out and reformat and reinstall
from scratch.

Warning: if you need .Net Framework 3.0 for anything, it does not
install in XP Service Pack 3. It only installs in Service Pack 2.

you should be able to
utilize the genuine
win cd's repair console
to perform the above.

basically, the first step
is manually replacing the
corrupted registry with
a basic one.

then once you are able
to boot, you can use
the desktop to replace
the basic hive with a
more current one.

--------

however, before you begin
you might want to try running
a chkdsk and a fixboot and a
fixmbr from the repair console
to see if you can make your
system bypass the error you
have now.

Thanks for the information. But will wiping the partition and reformatting
give me back the full 40Gig to use?

Hi frajul2,

Is that your entire Hard Drive size? Partitions are also considered to
be Hard Drive in the operating system. What I am asking is how large is your
physical Hard Drive, before partitioning the Hard Drive?

I ask, because if the Hard Drive is 250 GB in size and you already
partitioned it into various sizes, you need to be careful, in which
partitions are deleted.

The hard drive is 40 Gig. I had about 15 Gig open on the HD when the problem
occurred and when I did a format and install that was what was formatted. Can
I retrieve the other 25 Gig?

Hi frajul2,

Once you have met all the conditions to allow you to install Windows XP
from your Windows XP CD, you can do your partition work and delete all
partitions and then use the entire Hard Drive as a single Logical Hard
Drive, then format and install the operating system.

Or a more expensive way, buy Acronis Disk Director Suite 10.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...actory=8158&SubCategory=377&SpeTabStoreType=0

Log into your Windows XP operating system and install Acronis Disk
Director Suite in there and reclaim all of the Hard Drive, if you so choose
to do so.

Up to you.
