Corrupt word dokument

Hi All. I am busy pulling my hair out! I hope someone can help!

While I am typing Word suddenly do not respond and save
all of my document caracters in a strange Y umlite characters. This happens
on all the maschine I use and yes I have done virus scans and use the repair
option in Word. This document is a chapter in my dissitation so I need help
urgently!
