Corrupt system files

Hardware IBM R40 running XP. I suspect a virus has corrupted my system, but
I cannot reach a point to be able to run a fix program. Trying to run the
Add/Remove Software so I can re-install virus protection gives exception
error. Trying to start IE or various other apps gives error or no response
at all. Is there a way to run a virus scan from a "boot mode" or something
else I can do to try?

You can scan your computer with your antivirus program from Safe Mode.

And if this still doesn't solve the problem try CIA DRiVE.net from
http://www.datapol.de/dpe/freeware and run an offline Anti-Virus Scan from a
second computer.
