Corrupt system files

I purchased an emachine about 9 monthds ago that came
with Windows XP Home Edition installed (and no
replacement CDs). Apparently my computer became infecte
with blaster & trojan ad some other worms! I have
successfully removed these files with Norton. However, my
Windows systems files are corrupt and the system is
processing at a snails pace. The option I have with
emachine support is to install a system restore (CD they
have provided) amd restore my system to what it was when
I first purchased it. This will erase all of my programs,
data, files, links, etc. and is not an appealing
solution. Is there any way MS or someone can just
patch/fix these files? It doesn't seem fair that I would
have to pruchase an entire Windows program for a computer
that is less than a year old. Any suggestions??????

Unfortunately, when one does not use a good antivirus program, firewall,
and keep current with Windows Critical Updates, your system is susceptible
to viruses, worms and the like. If you do not wish to use the eMachine
Restore CD to return your system to its original factory condition, all you
can do is go out and purchase a "Full Version" of a conventional Windows XP
and try a "Repair Install". There is no 100% guarantee that even a "Repair Install"
will work if your PC suffers from virus damaged system files.

To be fair, you were the one who allowed those viruses onto your computer.
Had you observed the basic rules for protecting your computer:

"Protect Your PC"
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/default.asp

you would most likely not have been infected. Now you'll have to backup
every file and folder that is important to you:

"Backup Made Easy"
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/columns/bott/03july14.asp

and transfer the backup to CDs (or DVDs, if you have third party DVD
recording software). Then you can use eMachine's recovery CDs to erase your
hard disk and restore your computer to the way it was when your first turned
it on. Of course, you will have to update all your software (don't forget
Windows Update) and set up your computer the way you like it all over again.
