Corrupt system file

Help!!!

Is it possible to recreate the system file i.e
c:\windows\system32\config\system if it is corrupt or
missing and there is no backup available? My original
windows installtion fails to start.

I have installed XP again under an alernative installation
i.e. C:\WINDOWS2 and have access to the original directory
structures in C:\WINDOWS. However, I want to boot under
my original installation to run previously installed
software.

Any help would be greatfully appreciated.
