Mike, et al,
Please excuse my stupidity but what is an "OEM" version of XP?
Someone referred to my computer as an OEM because it is a Sony (Sony VAIO
RXA842), but I don'y know what OEM stands for.
Thanks, AnnieO

Annie,

Original Equipment Manufacturer (or PITA, pain in the a**e)
OEM is used to refer to the company that acquires a product or component and
reuses or incorporates it into a new product with its own brand name.

FYI, More information on OEM. (Original Equipment Manufacturer)

An OEM version of Windows:
Can only be bought through a reseller, not from Microsoft.
Is completely supported by the seller. Microsoft does not officially support OEM versions. (Except for updates and hotfixes)
The reseller can make changes to what is included on the OEM copy of Windows.
Cannot be transferred to another PC.
Can be upgraded, but only with a Retail version of Windows.
Usually is lower priced than a retail copy.

On most systems bought from an OEM reseller (Sony, Dell, HP, Gateway, etc.) will have OEM versions of the operating system, other software, hardware such as Motherboards, video card, sound card, etc.
