Corrupt files

When tying to open an XL file - in use since April 2008 - I get a message
"Excel cannot open the file Payments 20089 because the file format or file
extension is not valid. Verify that the file is not corrupted and that the
file extension matches the format of the file."
I downloaded SP1 a week ago.
Any suggestions as to how I might recover the file ? There doesn't seem to
be a copy cached anywhere. Simple instuctions please as I'm not very
technical.
Here's hoping !!

To correct this error, select a project type that matches the documen
extension, or a document that matches the project type. If this ca
repair your file then good for you but if it doesn’t work then you nee
to use Excel Repair Software to repair your corrupted file. You can tr
Stellar Phoenix Excel Repair Software to resolve your corruptio
problem. Just download the demo version from h
http://www.repair-excel-file.com and scan your file. If you are able t
view your file in preview mode as it was earlier before corruption the
you need to get full version to save your file
