Corrupt file help

Bob Moyer

I am just an end-user here and not a computer wizard, so I would greatly
appreciate your help.

I am experiencing some various quirkiness with my video editing software
(Vegas 6.0c) and particleIllusion 3.02. The developers at particleIllusion
suggested that I download a utility called 'code sniper' to see if my codecs
were ok. Well, it listed about 140 various files and all it listed were
either "OK" or "Broken". All was fine except for the following file:

"Class - DirectShow
Name - MPEG-2 Sections and Tables
Filename - %systemroot%system32mpeg2data.ax
FourCC - (blank)
Version - (blank)
Status - broken "

I have tried to search for that file on the net but I have come to the
conclusion that it might be a part of Directx 9.0. I ran 'dxdiag' and I do
have 9.0c installed (version 4.09.0000.0904). Could someone please help me
either repair that file or direct me to where I could download a
replacement? If replacing is even an option, could you tell me also the
procedures for doing so. I am in desperate need of my quirky programs listed
at the beginning of this.

Thanks,
Bob

Hello Bob.

I'm wondering if that's a typo: 'mpeg2data.ax' should be 'mpg2data.ax'

Try this:

Insert your Windows installation CD and stop any autostart.
Go to Start => Run and type in (or copy/paste) the following:

expand -r E:\i386\mpg2data.ax_ C:\Windows\System32\

Where E: is the drive letter for your CD-ROM. There is space before
and after -r and a space before C:

If it's not that, you could try reinstalling DirectX. The download is
here:

Claymore,
I am downloading the file now. As I indicated in the first post I am not
very knowledgeable about this stuff. Is it possible just to re-install over
the existing installation?
And as to your question: "I'm wondering if that's a typo: 'mpeg2data.ax'
should be 'mpg2data.ax'" I copied and pasted that info directly from the
program "Codec Sniper". I also just now ran it again to check and that is
really what it says. Do you think that it might be the problem? It did
identify it as "DirectShow" and the name category "MPEG-2 Sections and
Tables" is what I had searched on and led me to think it was Directx stuff.

Thanks for your quick replies.

Hello again,

"Is it possible just to re-install over the existing installation?"

Yes, should be OK.

And, 'mpeg2data.ax' is a legitimate file installed by DirectX.

Well, I re-installed DirectX 9.0c over top of the previous install and the
utility "Codec Sniper" still reports the same file as broken. I have no idea
what to do next. Any suggestions??

Last message.....I ran "G" Spot (another codec utility) and selected to
're-register' the problem file and it seemed to work. "Codec Sniper" now
reports ALL codec files as 'OK'.
