Corrected posting - Duplicate folders

C

Curt

I examined my situation again. This posting reflects the
situation more accurately.

I just upgraded fom Office 2000 to Office XP 2002. Now
when I open Outlook, I have 2 sets of "Personal Folders"
matching my old data, and a "Personal Folder" that's
trying to point to Outlook1.pst.

I have these several sets of folders right now:
- 3 sets of Archive Folders - I get an error message if I
try to
open these ("Unable to display the folder. Microsoft
Outlook could not access the specified folder location.
The .DLL file for the information service could not be
found. MAPI was unable to load the information service
PSTPRX.DLL. Be sure the service is correctly installed
and configured.")
- 2 sets of Outlook Today (Personal folders) - This is my
correct
set of data folders for Inbox, Calendar, Contacts, etc.
These two sets are exactly alike, and when email
downloads, it downloads into both Inboxes.
- 1 Personal folders - When I click on this I get an
error
message ("Unable to display the folder. Microsoft Outlook
could not access the specified folder location. The file
C:\Documents and Settings\Curt\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook1.pst could not be found.)
It's apparently trying to look for Outlook1.pst -- which
I don't have.

I just need to get rid of the extraneous folders, but
Outlook won't let me. Maybe this is a Registry task? If
so, YIKES.
Thanks.

No, you didn't understand. I have an entire duplicate of
my Outlook Today - Personal Folders, including ALL of
these folders: Contacts, Calendar, Inbox, Journal, Notes,
Outbox, Sent Items and Tasks. In addition, I have a
Personal Folders branch that I cannot edit or delete,
which displays this error message when you click it:
Unable to display the folder. Microsoft Outlook could not
access the specified folder location. The file
C:\Documents and Settings\Curt\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook1.pst could not be found.

Please reconsider and supply any help possible. Thanks.

Milly understood perfectly.
You have a corrupt profile from the way you upgraded.
Create a new one.

Nope - no good. All that did was create yet another set
of personal folders. I still cannot close or delete the 3
others.
Now what?

A thought. I don't know why Outlook works precisely this way, but it does
it for me, and it might help in your case:

After my Outlook 2002 installation does an AutoArchive, I end up -- because
of the way I've set AutoArchive to work -- with a slew of open "Archive
Folders" .PSTs sitting in Outlook's folder view. The *only* way I can close
these .PSTs is as follows:

# From Outlook Today, click to display the drop-down
Folder View
# click the thumbtack in the top right corner to stick the
Folder View onto the Outlook Today pane
# Right-click each Archive Folders .PST, and select the
Close option from the drop-down menu

This should at least get rid of the Archive Folders you've got sitting open,
and it's barely possible that the tacked-open Folder View will let you work
with the surplus Personal Folders views in a rational manner.

You need to create and configure a new profile correctly.
Create it from scratch. Do not copy your old profile. Give the new profile a
different name. Then configure it to use the correct Outlook Data File by
setting that file to be your default. Then you can close the new one Outlook
created.
Read the instructions on how to Crete a new profile correctly:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;829918&Product=out2003
And, if necessary, read the instruction on how to migrate Outlook Data Files
correctly:
