Copying Styles

Using Word 2003 in Windows XP SP2

In template ABC I've got Headings 1 to 8 formatted as numbered styles
(e.g 1; 1.1; 1.1.1, etc). There is also quite a bit of font and
paragraph formatting set into these styles.

They all work well in documents created with template ABC.

I now want to transfer these styles to template XYZ. I open template
ABC and then using Tools>Macros>Organizer open template XYZ.

Selecting the styles I want to transfer in ABC I then press the Copy>>
button to do so to XYZ.

Checking that the copy procedure has been successful I select one of
the new updated headings in XYZ and find that only about half of the
style definition has copied across.

I also notice that all of the styles I copied over have aso been
updated but with only half of the definition.

Is there a reason for this happening, please? And is there a way of
ensuring all of the style definition gets copied from one template to
another?

My first guess would be that the styles in question are inheriting some
settings from a common base style (such as Normal), and that you're not
copying the base/common style as well. In the ABC file, open the Modify
Style dialog for one of the styles in question, and see what's listed under
Style based on:. Then, copy that style as well to the XYZ template.

If that's out of the question due to unique attributes in the XYZ file's
Normal style, another option would be to clone ABC's Normal style and name
it something like NormalABC. Then change the heading styles so that they are
based on NormalABC instead of on Normal, whilst copying NormalABC to the XYZ
template as well.

Thanks for the advice Herb.

Tried both your suggestions and they still didn't want to play!

What I eventually did was manually copied over the styles and then
modified each one in turn to add the missing bits.

Won't try that again in a hurry!
