copying registry

Lately parts of some of my programs have stopped working...eg: shortcut to
mail in msn messenger....or the ability to run wmi...etc etc....quite a few
more. Anyway my question is...
If I do a restore to a previous date...everything works just fine. If I
undo my restore...losts of stuff stops working so I suspect either I made a
change in my services that I dont remember...or something in my registry has
changed.
Can I back up my registry on the 'new' restore point...and then undo my
restore to todays date and import the old registry settings?
I realize that with todays restore point there are probably some programs I
didnt have on the the 'old' restore point. Will I have problems?....whats
the worst that can happen.

no, that idea will only recreate the problem because the registry reflects
what you have. that is if the shortcuts or links are missing, "they are
simply missing". And trying to get to bring forward a previous version of the
registry, will simply have the same problem with finding those links. Do the
restore that bring you back operational. And take care of what alterations
you make hence forward. Your lucky that this is only a minor problem. It
could have been a disaster affecting "all" your programs. Also, keep in
mind that some registry cleaners/tune-ups may delete unused links and
shortcuts. So be sure to backup the registry before cleaning it. A freeware
called ERUNT can make backing your registry a bit easier....
