COPYING PICTURES TO CD'S

I am going crazy! I have tried using Picture it! LIbrary 9 to archive my
pictures but I keep getting an error message that the program had problems
with one or all of my files. I have tried rebatching the names in an effort
to change any unacceptable characters. after numerous days I switched to try
copying them directly from Windows. I go to my computer and chose the file
to download but I don't get the "picture task" option therefore no "copy to
cd" option. I have done the start, run device properties, enable burning
technique and no such luck. Can somebody help with either MICROSOFT Picture
it! Library 9 or just simply copying them using xp? I have the files saved
in numberous subfolders under the "my pictures icon" on my desktop. Thank
you to anyone who can help me!!

Below is the procedure to copy to CD using XP as well as the problems you
may encounter and how to solve them.
Once you solve the problem and you can copy to CD with XP, you probably will
be able to do it directly from Picture It.

To copy photos to CD-R or CD-RW using XP. (01-01-05)

1.. Insert a blank CD-R (or CD-RW) into your CD drive. Wait about 15-20
seconds for XP to recognize that a CD-R has been inserted. A window may
open, with a variety of options in it. You don't need any of the options in
this window to copy to a CD-R. There is a Cancel button at the bottom of
this window. Click on it to close this window. If this window does not open,
this is fine just go to step 2.
2.. Click on My Computer and navigate to the folder where your pictures
are located. Open the folder so you can see the files you want to copy.
3.. You now need to select the files you want to copy. Do you want to copy
all the files in the folder? If so, hold the Ctrl key down and press the
letter A. This will select (highlight in blue) all the files in the folder.
If you want to select only some of the files, click on the first file you
want to select. Remove your finger from your mouse and move the mouse
pointer over the second file, hold the Ctrl key down and click on the second
file you want to select. Continue doing this until all the files you want to
copy are selected. Each time a file is selected it will be highlighted in
blue. If the files you want to select are listed in a row, you can do it
this way. Click on the first file, remove your finger from the mouse and
move the mouse pointer over the last file. Hold the Shift key down and click
on the last file you want. All the files between the first and last file you
clicked on will be highlighted in blue.
4.. Once you have selected the files you want to copy, look at the menu on
the left of the selected files. The top menu should be "Picture Tasks". The
last item listed under "Picture Tasks" is "Copy to CD". Click on it. The
other way is to right click on one of the selected pictures. A menu will
open. Click on Send To. Click on your CD drive on the opening list.
5.. The copying process will start (a small window opening at the top of
your screen indicating the progress, wait until completed, also you may not
see this window if you are copying just a few files because the operation is
too fast) and you will get a message, right hand corner bottom of your
screen, "You have files waiting." Click on it.
6.. A window will open. It will show you the photo files you just selected
to copy. Look at the menu on the left and click on "Write these files to CD"
..
7.. A Wizard box will open. Just follow the directions on the screen to
complete the job.
8.. Once you have copied the photos to the CD you may want to copy more to
it in the future. Just insert it instead of inserting a blank CD and follow
the same directions. Just make sure you have enough space on it to add more
photo files. A CD will hold 700 MB but with photo files, don't try to fill
it. Limit to about 200 - 300 photo files per CD and not more than a total of
600 MB. Otherwise it can take a long time to open this CD to view the files,
but if you don't mind the time you can fill it.

Some problems with the above:

1.. You looked for the command "Copy to CD", but it is not there. If so,
repair this way.
Click on Start, click on Run and type the following in the opening textbox:

REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL

And press the Enter key.

Note that there is a space between .32 and SHI..

You did the above, but still no "Copy to CD" command available. Go to step 2
below and check if your drive is set to recording.

2.. You can find the "Copy to CD" command but it still does not work.
Check if your drive is set for recording. Open My Computer, look under
Devices with removable storage and right click on your CD drive. Click on
Properties. A window will open. Click on the Recording tab at the top of
this window. Then check, Enable recording box. Also, check the box "Eject
after recording" .

You tried this, but you can't find a Recording tab when the window opens. If
so, update the CD driver so it is compatible with XP (particularly if you
upgraded to XP from 98 or ME) or something else is wrong as under items 3 or
4 below.

3.. You may have installed some CD copying software to copy music CDs. If
so, this may be interfering with XP. If you use Roxio, update your version
to at least 5.3 or above. If you have Roxio 7, use this to copy photo files.
Use the option Copy files instead of copy music. If you have other music CD
copying software make sure you upgrade to a version that will not interfere
with XP or use this software to copy your photo files to CD.
4.. You may have purchased a new computer with a CD/DVD burner. If so, don
't use XP to copy to CD, use the software supplied by the manufacturer and
select the copy files option if there is no specific copy photo files
option.
5.. Instead of using the Copy to CD command you used the Send to command
and no CD drive is listed there. If you upgraded to XP you should check that
you have a driver for your CD drive compatible with XP or first check that
your drive is Enable for recording as given above. Sometimes you get the
instruction to send to a writable CD drive on the list but you don't get
writable, you get drag and drop or simply the CD drive letter. Click on it,
provided you have checked that the drive is Enabled for recording.
6.. If none of the above works, check the manufacturer of the CD drive web
site for a driver compatible with XP, particularly if you upgraded to XP.

I am now at the stage where I have hit (under picture task) copy to cd but I
am getting an error message on about half of my pictures that says "windows
has encountered a problem when trying to copy this file. What do you want
windows to do? Retry, skip, or cancel. I am trying to download about 450 MB
worth of files which shouldn't be too many-should it? They are all JPG
files. Thank you

OK. You are getting there!
Tell me a little bit more about this error meesage.
Say you start the process, and 5 files are copied and you get this message
on file #6. What did you do? Skip the file? and then continue and you get
the message again on say file #12. What did you do? Skip again?
At the end, did you get files copied on the CD? And can you open the CD and
see these files?

X Question: I downloaded pictures with the XP system onto a cd, checked it to see if pictures opened and they did, got home & tried to open the cd with a ME system and it does nothing,, went to another XP and it worked great, so with both XP systems it opens and plays great, but with a ME, the CD wont open at all, ROM wont recogzine the Cd at all....... any ideas ????????????????

If you use XP to copy photos on a CD, they will open only on a XP system.
You can change this, to make the CD readable on any Windows operating system
and even on a MAC, by adding three files to the CD when you use XP to copy.
To do so, go to the following site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx
Download the file Slideshow.exe into one of your folder or make a new folder
to save it in.
Once the file is saved, open the folder, double click on the file to install
it.
Once installed, when you use XP to copy to a CD the Wizard will ask you,
toward the end of the process, if you want to have this CD as an automatic
slide show. You just answer Yes. Three files will be added to your photo
files on the CD and now you can play a slide show on any Windows ( I think
back to 95 but for sure 98) system and even a MAC, don't quite know how far
back on a MAC.

checked it to see if pictures opened and they did, got home & tried to
open the cd with a ME system and it does nothing,, went to another XP and it
worked great, so with both XP systems it opens and plays great, but with a
ME, the CD wont open at all, ROM wont recogzine the Cd at all....... any
ideas ????????????????

I was getting the message about every 3-4 files...then would answer to skip
ahead. I got some error messages that said the file may be altered when
copied and did I want to continue so I said yes to all of them. At the
end....once it went thru all the pictures (and I saw the progress bar move)
nothing happened. nothing loaded to the cd at all!

OK.
Then try to copy one file.
We need to know if the copying procedure is proceeding correctly.
If it is, then we can check further as to why you are getting errors
messages.

that's the problem.....it won't let me do even one. I tried a number of
different ones and keeps giving me the same error message. I checked the
properties area of my D: drive and and the recording tab is enabled. Now
what?

1. When you checked the Properties, was the Enable box already checked, or
did you have to check it?
2. Do you have any music copying software installed on your computer, such
as Roxio or Nero? If you do can you tell us the version of the software you
are using.
3. You can now at least start the process with Copy to CD. What is the error
message that you get?
4. Have you used this CD drive before and copied anything to a CD?
5. Is this a fairly recent (two years) computer that came with XP loaded on
it, or did you upgrade to XP?

I had to check the Enable box. I have Nero installed and have used it
version is 6,3,0,2----not sure why the numbers are like that but that's what
it says). I have also copied pictures to a cd thru kodak's easy share
software. I'm thinking that this is the problem isn't it? I got this
computer loaded with xp already in it about a year ago. The error message is
"windows has encountered a problem when trying to copy this file. What do
you want windows to do? Retry, skip, or cancel. I also get one that says
some of the information may be lost do you want to continue.

Y

Yves Alarie

If you had to check the Enable box, it means that some other software has
taken this function over XP. Normally, going to Enable... will give this
function back to XP but obviously it is not doing so in your case.
You have a very recent version of Nero, but still I would go to the Nero
site and check to update to the latest version. I would do the same thing
with the Easy share.
I don't have this software. Instead I have Roxio to copy music and it is
easy to use to copy photo files. I just use "Copy data files" and use this
if I want to make a label on the CD, because the label creator will
automatically will in the file names on the label. You probably have the
same option with Nero. Nevertheless, it is annoying of not being able to use
XP. So check for updated version of these softwares and see if this would
solve the problem.
