copying permissions

I'm building an FTP site using Windows 2000 server, and I need to apply
"drop box" type permissions to a group of folders, which requires
setting advanced permissions for a certain group. Is there a way to
create some sort of template for these permissions so I can easily apply
the same set of permissions to all the folders?

Thanks,

Alan

This doesnt make sense.

are you talking about a webpage that allows you to administer the
permissions on these folders?

it sounds like you need to ask this question in an .asp group, or something.

I'm speaking of the local seutiy settings for a folder (right click on
folder, go to Poperties, click on Security tab and click Advanced...
button.) Don't get side tracked by the FTP part of the original post.

You can copy files along with their permissions by using the Robocopy
utility from the Windows 2000 Resource Kit. It isn't part of the free
Support Tools download for 2000, but it looks as if it's available from the
following page as part of the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit. I haven't
tried that, but I can't foresee any problems using that.

As for scripting the permissions, take a look at the cacls.exe utility,
which is built in to Windows.

Looks like it would do the trick. Unfortunately, robocopy.exe is not
posted anywhere on Microsoft's site. They removed it from the Win2K
resource kit for some reason.

If anyone out there has a copy, I'd apprecciate an email.

The Windows 2003 kit won't install on a Win2K system.

So it wasn't in the Windows 2003 Resource Kit? I didn't check, but assumed
it would be there.

The download for Windows 2000 is a cut down version of the full RK. If you
get TechNet, it will be in there.
