Hi, I'm trying to use a 4gb drive for troubleshooting and recovering files
etc from buggered up installs of XP. I installed a copy of Win ME on it so I
could then use it as a bootable drive with all the AV/antispyware/firewalls
installed. And then I could copy over all the files needed to be recovered
from the XP install.
However, after setting all the jumpers, cables and bios appropriately
whenever I boot the pc the bios will see the XP drive but WinME doesn't.
I've tried new cables, resetting the jumpers etc but to no avail!!
any ideas would be greatly appreciated
thanx

WinME or any Win9x/DOS OS for that matter, cannot "natively" read NT OS
formatted drives as the default is type "NTFS'. Check at
www.systernals.com, I believe you can still download a driver for the
WinME/9x/DOS systems that "read" data NTFS partitions for free, if you wish
to write to NTFS partitions, then I believe you have to pay for that one.
Once the "NTFS" driver is installed you should be able to see the drive and
copy data from it to another location.

If the XP drive was formatted NTFS, Win ME will NOT be able to read it as
NTFS is not supported..

arrrrggghhhh!!
been working in XP so long now (& newb too!) that I forgot the compatibility
is one-way...
thanx for the clear answer as well as the link.....all is fixed and will now
work as planned.
thanx again

The XP is probably installed on an NTFS partition. Win9x, including ME,
have no support for NTFS and will not recognise the disk
