Copying folders from backup CD to new computer

The old computer runs Win 98SE, with IE 6. The new one will run Win XP Pro,
and presumably IE 6 or later.

Here's my concern: I made a backup (copy) CD readable by any CD machine of
My Documents plus all other data that wasn't in the My Docs folder. I used
Direct CD, but the new DVD drive will run on Nero.

I made a second CD backup that contains folders/files that I will probably
need to copy mail, address books, favorites-- Windows\All Users,
Windows\Application Data, Windows\Favorites. Did I miss any critical
folders that I should copy to the CD for copying over to the new computer?

Also -- when I copy from the CD to the new drive, do I include the name of
the "old" folder or will this create a second folder or subfolder. For
example, if I give the command Copy D:My Documents to C: My Documents, will
a subfolder be created? Should I merely select all the folders contained
within and omit the name of the folder on the CD, and then copy to the "new"
My Documents?

Lastly, should I install the others apps (Office, Quicken, etc.) before I
copy over the My Documents or does it matter which goes first?

Thanks for your help -- Judy

If Direct CD used a proprietary method of copying the data, then you will
need Direct CD to read the disks. If it gave you the option to simply copy
the data in ISO format, then you can read the disks using Windows Explorer.
It looks like you got the necessary folders to copy over to your new
machine. But you should keep in mind that you could just use the Windows
Files And Settings Transfer wizard (FAST) to do what you want to do.

Just select the contents of the various common folders. So just select all
the subfolders and files in your backup of My Documents and copy them to the
My Documents folder on the new system. Again, you could use FAST to do all
this.

You can install your applications at your leisure. The files created under
them won't have any association until the application that created them is
installed. Their icons will be generic Windows icons until you get the
application installed.

Thanks for all the information. I have never heard of a FAST wizard...it is
part of Win XP? I will look but I have never seen it as part of Win 98SE.
