copying files

I am a college student, working on a project for a computer class.
I copied a file on my lab partners computer, and now I cant edit it.
It will only open as a read only.
Is there any way I can open it?

Did you use a CD-Rom to do the copying? If so, the Read-only property of the
file (which was set when you copied to the CD-Rom) may not have been reset
when you copied to the hard drive. Right-click on the file and check its
properties.
