copying files from PC to laptop

guys,

i know there has been many threads with regards to copying files from
one machine to another and many people have ran in to the same
experience as myself, but wondered if someone would help me
troubleshoot my specific issue.

i have a pc running xp pro and a laptop running xp pro also. they are
in the same workgroup with no domain set.

im not able to copy various files from one machine to the other. they
seem to be random files and its really anoying. can anyone offer some
help in troubleshooting what the hell is going on?

i've tried a few things that i could find off some of the threads in
here but to no avail.

thanks in advance

What other methods have you attempted? This would help us eliminate that
process.

Are you talking about copying files by saving it on CD & transferring it to
the other machine?

Did you make sure to write the files into the CD?
Does the other PC have the same application to run the files?

Exact Error messages are the first place to start. Self diagnosis would
start with identifying the exact files and their location and size and
other attributes looking for the "non-random" factor.

hi guys,

yes, a rather poor description on my part...sorry for that....i'll try
again.

i have a PC and a laptop that i want to keep 'in sync' with each
other. i use a program called 'Allway Sync' and started to have
problems with it. it uses shared folders across a network to copy from/
to each machine.

machines on the network are:
pc = 192.168.0.1
laptop = 192.168.0.22
BOTH WORKGROUP are set to the same.

on my laptop i call up from explorer a folder called \\192.168.0.1\pc
and copy everything from my c:\....\laptop into it. some files do not
copy across and come up with a message from windows saying :

"Cannot copy <filename>: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not
full or write-protected and that the file is not currently un use."

this seems to happen on random files; i.e. most are fine (22,000+
files), but a handful (5 or so) come up with this message. i've
checked permissions as far as i know how to (look at properties from
windows). i can't see any similarities between the files that wont
copy and any other file that will.

this happens when i try to 'pull' the files from my laptop off the pc.
i.e. from my laptop, copy the file from 192.168.0.1\pc\.....<file> to
c:\.....laptop

what i can do though is 'push' the same file from the pc to the
laptop. i.e. from my pc, copy the file from c:\......pc to
192.168.0.22\.....laptop

if the file exists on both the pc and laptop after i've 'pushed' the
file onto my laptop from the pc and i try to copy the file again,
'pulling' to the laptop from the pc, i get the error again.

convinced it is permissions, but not sure where to check. i'm also not
too up on windows networking as far as the guest user is concerned and
also the workgroup.

thanks

And the <filename> of the file(s) that cannot be copied were named what
and located where? They could be logfiles that are open by the other
operating system, they could be image files the operating system has a
lock on. Are you using the SAME name AND password combo on BOTH systems.

hi

all files that i have problems with are user data files; like
spreadsheets.

i guess you mean username when you ask 'SAME name' - yes same name is
used on both machines and there is no password set on either machine
for the users

In that case you have a couple options, set up and use the same password
so that the security is consistant, OR run your "backup" from the PC the
files are being copied FROM.

hi bob,

thanks for that. i'm now using passwords on both machines, so they
have same username/password as each other, but i still have the same
issue, so maybe it is something else?

Can you copy the files without problems using Windows Explorer, not
using this third party program?
