My system has crashed and I cannot load windows because a
VFAT device is failing to initialise on boot. Does anyone
know if I can buy an exterior hard drive or CD writer and
install it in DOS so that I can copy some files from my
hard drive before I use my recovery CD, which will wipe my
entire HD?

I would be so grateful for any help as I don't want to
loose years of work!

If there are DOS drivers for the external device, its possible, but I
wouldn't hold much hope for that. It might be better, faster, and easier to
just put the drive into a working computer and see if you can copy the files
that way. Then you'll know if your drive is actually readable or not instead
of wondering if the problem has to do with the external device.
