I am trying to copy all my files (data and programs) over from my old
Dell computer to a new NEC computer, using a multi-head
serial/parallel cable, using the serial or parallel ports on both
machines. The reason for my method is that I currently back up using
Travan Tapes on the Dell. I have about 1GB of files now and have no
CDROM or DVD write facilities or network. While some of the programs I
can install from the original windows 95 CDROM's and diskettes, some
have been downloaded and are too big to tranfer via diskettes.

The Dell is Windows 95 with 16MB of RAM and the NEC is Windows XP
with 1 GB of RAM

According to an article in PC Advisor, the XP transfer wizard does not
let you copy programs, so that is out. I tried emailing one of the
programs as an attachment but Internet Explorer will not let me access
it, claiming it is dangerous.

Also the Direct cable connection program under Windows 95 mentions
only accessing, which implies only reading.

Any suggestions please?

You cannot 'copy' programs. You need the installation disks or the origonal
download setup files.
When you install a program it adds files in many places and adds/registers
entries to the win.registry, hence you cannot simply copy.
Also many win95 apps will not run on a win nt based o/s, which is what
win2k/winxp is.
Winxp is completely different to win9*

Thanks,

I thought that might be the case. However my download file for
Netscape 4.7 is a .exe file.I notice however that some of the other
downlaod files are .zip but others are .exe too. I could try
downloading netscape 4.7 again but wasn't sure of a trusted site for
this. I need Netscape 4.7 temporarily to process emails within my
current folder structure, until I decide on a new email client.
Explorer is causing me problems because I cannot just view emails, I
have to dowload the latest first, before I can view and I want to keep
these in the folder structure of Netscape on my old machine for the
time being.

I would have thought there was a way to copy such dowload installation
programs over.

Vic
Thanks for the spam tip. I'll sort it out later.

To use/run a zip installer you can use winzip
http://www.winzip.com/

I see you have your own domain, why not use Outlook Express, installed by
default with Win*
I dont know about transfering/copy old mail from Netscape to OE, I'm sure
someone in the OE newsgroup, part of the Internet Explorer group would tell
you

That was the first place I looked and couldn't find it. I just looked
again and still can't. Have you found it?

I had downloaded Netscape 8 instead but they have now removed the
email client and bully you into taking a weather program which doesn't
uninstall. It's now being run by AOL I am informed.

Yes I know, I had to use winzip to unzip the other downloads I
mentioned were .zips.

Thanks, but this isn't helping. I will look elsewhere.

Because I find Microsoft software often doesn't work, the service is
poor and it does things you didn't ask it to do and didn't want done.
I speak from personal experience. Also its nore vunerable to attack.

Vic
