copying data to a disc

Hi,
I need to copy data to discs in XP, but I'm a little lost, having never
saved to disc before. {I don't even really know what formatting a disc
means!} Can someone give me some basic foolproof directions on how to get
started?

thanks!

Are you using any CD writing software such as Roxio or Nero? If so then
click on My Computer and then right-click on D: drive (or the drive in
which the CD is); Select format and sit tight until the system has
finished formatting the disk. It can take upto 20 minutes depending on
the speed of your machine. For the first time just do Quick format so
that it takes less time.

thanks for the quick responses!
I'ts for a new computer. no roxio. I need to back up data files, and
quickbooks files.
The disc is DVD/RW re-recordable, which is what the guy at Staples said to
buy. Directions would be great!

Hi Kep,
Win Xp doesen't contain built-in support for burning DVDs. In order to write
on DVD you need a third party software like Nero Burning Rom, Roxio Easy
Media Creator etc. Anyway, those are commercial CD/DVD software... Here you
have a list of free programs that support DVD burning

Hope this helps
Good luck
