Copying background to an object

How do I copy a complex background (colored and textured) to an object. When
I apply the background from the object from the "Format Auto Shape" menu, it
always comes out a different shade than the slide background and I can't
figure how to modify it. Is there a way to modify it using the options
available, or is there a way I can find out the VBA code associated with the
current background?

Save the background as an image and then use that as your background for
your auto shape.

You could open the file in PPT and click on the Slide Sorter View icon.
Find a file that has the background you want. Right click it, choose Copy.
Now move your cursor to just between that slide and the next one. You'll
see a vertical bar showing there. Right click and choose Paste. Highlight
that newly copied slide and double click it to bring it up as the working
slide. Now delete everything on it except the background. You should have
a background only slide. If you want to make more of them go back to Slide
Sorter View, right click that slide (background only) choose Copy. Move
your bar between it and the next slide a choose Paste. Now you have 2
background only slides.

If you want to make a bunch of them now highlight the first one hold down
the Shift key to highlight the next one also. Right click, choose Copy.
Move your bar where you want the new ones, right click and choose Paste.
There's 2 more slides for a total of 4. Highlight all 4, choose Copy, right
click choose Paste, now you paste 4 more copies. Next time you highlight
all 8 and make 8 more copies, etc.
