Copy Outlook.pst to another directory or burn to a CD

I'm using Outlook 2003 with Vista Home Edition - I've located Outlook.pst in
Vista. However, I get an error message: "0x80070021:...cannot
access...another process has locked a portion of the file." Outlook 2003 was
closed. Thank you

Are you trying to use the PST from the CD or a network share? If it's not on
the local PC, it won't work. Outlook needs read/write access to the PST.

I was trying to burn Outlook to a CD or copy it to another directory or email
it as a file so I could get the latest data from it to another computer. I
used to do this with the backup tool, etc. in XP. Vista seems to have
difficulties wiht Outlook 2003. Any reason why the file is "locked"?

file is somehow locked and can't be accessed. One can't copy it nor get it
to a CD - se my first post: <<I get an error message: "0x80070021:...cannot

Normally that error message indicates the file is on a network share. You
wouldn't happen to have a PDA connected?

It's also possible that your antivirus software has the file locked by the
real time scan engine.

Kathleen is correct; something else is locking the file then. For an easy
workaround you can start your computer in Safe Mode to make sure nothing is
locking the file. Once you've backed up the file you can troubleshoot the
locking issue if you want.

Thank you - I tried disabling the Firewall and Virus software - no help. But
I started in Safe Mode and was able to copy the file - and I've gone back to
Regular Mode and burned that copied file to a CD. Sucess!

A few follow-ups: any hints as to where I could track down what's locking
the file? A forum to post to? And - do you think Outlook 2007 would be a
better fit with Vista (and if yes could a .pst file created with it then be
read by the older Outlook 2003 which I have on other computers?

Outlook 2003 and 2007 are both fully supported to run on Windows Vista so
you can base your decision on whether or not you like the new Outlook 2007
and think it is worth the money. Outlook 2007 and Outlook 2003 pst-files are
compatible with each other so don't let that hold you back.

As for the application that might be causing the lockup; do you have a fax
application installed like WinFax Pro or something? Also, when you have a
PDA/Smartphone make sure it is disconnected from your computer or the sync
application might lock the pst-file as well.

I had this problem, running Vista + outlook 2003. Deskbar had an outlook
widget on it that was forcing the outlook process open, so every time I
ended the process it restarted, to service the deskbar gadget.

Solution, close any gadgets that feed from outlook.
