copy large number of files fails

When I try to copy a large number of files (more than several hundred) at
once, from one hard disk to another, or from a CD to a hard disk, the
operation always halts partway through. The error message varies. The
receiving disks have always been NTFS; the from disk file system has been
different.

Any suggestions?

What is(are) the exact error message(s)?

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

This morning it was about "Delayed write cache", but other times it's been
different, I can't remember what now. But today I was writing to an external
USB disk, and write caching was already turned off for that disk! After the
error, the disk was unmounted and I could not mount it again without
restarting it.

Other times I've had errors copying from internal CD to internal HD; then
the CD unmounts and I have to restart the computer to get it back. But this
was on a completely different machine! Makes me think there's a problem with
XP.
