Copy frorm 98/XP to 2000 changes file type

Has any experienced the following: Copy (dragging and
explicit copy) WORD documents from a 98 (or XP Pro) system
across a network onto a 2000 Server system (pushing or
pulling the document across the metwork doesn't matter).
Upon checking the listing directly on the 2000 Server
system the file displays as a WORDPAD type, however
checking the listing via the 98/XP system (across the
network) the file type still lists as a WORD document.

All the latest patches have been installed on all
machines. Any thoughts or suggestions or clarifications
that someone could provide would be greatly appreciated!

That is correct, WORD is not installed on the 2000 Server
system. However, the system is only being used as a file
server, storing and retrieving files for a small business.
Is it necessary to install WORD (or other applications) in
order to get the proper file type associations? Shouldn't
one be able to copy any file to a file server under 2000
SRV without it changing the type?
