Copy files over serial cable

I've connected my old (Win 98) machine to my new (Win XP) with a serial
LapLink cable in order to copy files acorss. I've tried the Transfer wizard
several times but it aways errors as soon as it has collected all the old
files together.

So then I thought I should be able to 'simply' set the old files up for
sharing, connect as a direct serial link and see the old files listed from
the new PC. All the help files imply that this should work and the 2
machines know they're connected, but I still can't see the old
files/folder/drives on the new machine.

Any ideas?

Question have you right clicked on the folders on the
Win98 machine to share them, I am not absolutely sure how
this is done on OS98, but that should relase them for the
transfer. And if the XP machine is seeing the 98 machine
then from the XP machine try a simple drag and drop, use
the action select all to those you wish to move.

Lastly does your 98 machine have a CD burner? If so why
not just burn the data onto a disk and use the disk as a
transfer method?

I did this using Fastlynx 3.2 on both machines, through my D-Link
router...easy as pie.(G)
Did the same using a null modem cable with an old DOS program called
Zip.com on both machines, did this numerous times over the years as i
changed machines.(G)

It will work, provided you do not have a large volume of files, or
have lots of time. I would not want to move more than 100 mb or so
via a serial cable, and even that would take many hours.

Try creating a folder named C:\Transfer on the old machine and have
FASTW save the data it gathers to that folder.

Then pull the hard drive out of the old computer and install it
temporarily as a second hard drive in the new machine.

Run FASTW on the new machine to import the data from the \Transfer
folder on the old machine's hard drive.

Good luck

Hi,

You can also use a cross connect via CAT 5 cable. Just hook the cross
connect to both NICs, then set a static IP and Subnet Mask for both
computers. The Subnet mask will be the same, just off set the IP address by
one. Another thing is to get a simple 10/100 ethernet hub and connect them
to it to transfer. Serial cable is just too slow.
